One of the upcoming projects this summer at 13 East Tulane Road will be an evening reception to enjoy art by friends of the Fresh A.I.R. (Artists In Recovery) Artists' Circle. The reception will be Saturday, August 21, 2010, 7pm to 9pm at 13 East Tulane Road.

In the Summertime, curated by Ryan Agnew, will feature original works of art by friends of the Fresh A.I.R. (Artists In Recovery) Gallery Artists’ Circle. The Fresh A.I.R. Gallery Artists’ Circle’s objective is to unite artists in an effort to bring about knowledge and opportunities to one another in collaboration with community. 13 East Tulane Rd is a cooperative artists’ studio and experimental project space in Columbus, Ohio.

GUIDELINES:

Original works must be delivered directly to 13 East Tulane Rd on Sunday, August 15 between 1pm and 4pm or Monday, August 16 between 1pm and 4pm. One to three works by each artist will be selected.

All media is welcome.

Entry forms may be completed when dropping off work.

Pick up of selected and non-selected work: August 21 following the reception or August 22, 1PM – 4PM

May 11, 8PM

Dan Shellenbarger, Executive Director of the Ohio Channel and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Art at the Ohio State University, will lead a workshop covering basics and specifics of the technical side of video including: resolution, formatting, importing, exporting, playing back...the real nuts and bolts of video making.

In short, Dan will talk about how to get things out of the camera and into an editor and then back again as a deliverable product, all while taking the mystery out of the codes, numbers and names associated with the myriad of video formats.

Tariq Tarey, a Columbus-based photographer and project manager for the Somali Documentary Project, will show his short film Dadaab: A Somali Struggle, followed by an informal discussion.

Dadaab: A Somali Struggle is a 12 minute documentary examining the conditions of the Dadaab refugee camp in North Eastern Kenya. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has declared Somalia to be the worst humanitarian crises in the world. It has also declared Dadaab to be the largest refugee camp in the world. Dadaab was designed to house 90,000 refugees. It is now home to 290,000 people, primarily Somalis. This film examines the UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations to fulfill basic needs of the people it serves under these extreme conditions.

Experiments with Movie Musicals

Stacie Sells, a Columbus-based artist and video editor, will present new video work in an installation that takes as its form a history of, and personal experience with, the movie musical.

All Video Support Group Film School events are free and open to the public and held at 13 East Tulane Rd.

Aluminum Foil Mountain and Worm Man
Aimee Sones and Ryan Agnew in collaboration with the Learning Site Audible Dwelling

Made of an everyday household material, Aimee Sones’s Aluminum Foil Mountain is a sculpture and day-long action that questions notions of planned obsolescence, consumption of natural resources and conflicted intersections of mining and agriculture. Sones collaborates with the physical qualities of the Learning Site Audible Dwelling to create a large, temporary sculpture of aluminum foil over one speaker house. Ryan Agnew’s Worm Man consists of sound recordings of the usually unheard and out-of-sight labors of worms churning and fortifying the earth. The sounds are amplified from both speaker houses. Agnew’s evening performance across the asphalt parking lot draws on concepts of displacement and habitation in Audible Dwelling.

An action has been formed - one that requires human effort to produce a product no more productive than its previous state. The machine and worker have created a system that is extraordinarily efficient at what it does, but what it does has no purpose.

The performance is durational; feel free to attend at any time between 6-10 PM.

For the months of April and May, 13 East Tulane Road will host a series of lectures, workshops and reading groups dedicated to the theory and practice of video and filmmaking. Tracing Lines Project Preview, February 19th

The project preview, is a glimpse into the collection of images of lines that intersect our daily paths, telephone poles and electrical power lines, radio towers and other parts of the electrical grid and infrastructure that supports our lives. These lines have been captured by many and assembled by Aimee Sones, Jessica Larva, John Javins, and Alex Copley. Joining us, project participants have continued to document the lines that can be a beautiful nuisance to our eyes. Images, objects and video of lines that cross the globe will be on display.

NONSTOP INSTITUTE OPENING SAT JAN 23

Nonstop Institute, a new non-profit cultural and educational organization in Yellow Springs, is getting ready to host the opening of their inaugural Open Village/Open Spaces six-week artist residencies, featuring installations by Columbus artists Orion Barrett, Linda Diec and Amy Koenig. Throughout the evening a silent auction will be held to raise money for Nonstop Institute.

Experience sounds of possible futures at It Looks Like It's Open, 13 E Tulane Road. In sounds like the future, Joshua Penrose demonstrates futuristic sonic constructions from the past. Ambient soundscapes extracted from old films are re-articulated in an invisible network. Move through the space and hear these physical systems that could have been.

Environmentalist, filmmaker, performance artist and prankster Mike Bonano of the Yes Men will appear live (via skype) to dialogue with the audience at Nonstop on Thursday evening, December 17 at 7 PM ($5 admission) at 305 N. Walnut St. (in the Millworks complex). In addition to screening some of the Yes Men's rarely seen early work and responding to viewers' questions, Mike will conduct a workshop with those attending to generate plans for a project in the Miami Valley. Don't miss this local engagement with the Yes Men!

Mike Bonano is one of the artist-activist Yes Men, who wrote, produced, and performed in the film The Yes Men Fix the World (2009). Recent Yes Men projects include last year's publishing and distribution of a special issue of The New York Times with headlines that the Yes Men and their collaborators wanted to see. The always provocative Yes Men have focused their creative actions in recent years on corporate irresponsibility in response to environmental disasters such as the catastrophic contamination in Bhopal, India as well a critique of lobbyists and organizations who refuse to recognize climate change as an impending global crisis. The Yes Men have also challenged governmental neglect in the current housing crisis in New Orleans.

The Yes Men's work as interdisciplinary artists have been featured in the Whitney Biennial (2006), and in The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere, an important exhibition at Mass MoCA (2005) of artists who "trespass into the everyday world to raise our awareness of injustice and other social problems." The Yes Men will be speaking with a Yellow Springs audience immediately following their attendance at the Copenhagen Climate Conference. See more about the Yes Men at their website: theyesmen.org. We will not meet for regular Video Support Group (tomorrow-December 8, December 22 or December 29).

Bring a wrapped (or disguised so we can't tell what it is) DVD - of a video you made or a video you love- for a DVD GRAB BAG EXCHANGE. As always, bring a friend too!
