JACK WRIGHT and JOHN M. BENNETT duo

SATURDAY JULY 18 2015 8PM @ IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S OPEN

The duo of Jack Wright, saxes, and John M. Bennett, words, will perform collaboratively and as soloists, at times with Wright wording and coughing through his horn and Bennett honking and braying through his words. This unique duo has been performing together since the 1980's. An electric performance, though no electricity is involved!

John M. Bennett has published over 400 books and chapbooks of poetry and other materials. He has published, exhibited and performed his word art worldwide in thousands of publications and venues. He was editor and publisher of LOST AND FOUND TIMES (19752005), and is Curator of the Avant Writing Collection at The Ohio State University Libraries. Richard Kostelanetz has called him “the seminal American poet of my generation”. His work, publications, and papers are collected in several major institutions, including Washington University (St. Louis), SUNY Buffalo, The Ohio State University, The Museum of Modern Art, and other major libraries. His PhD (UCLA 1970) is in Latin American Literature. www.johnmbennett.net and http://johnmbennettpoetry.blogspot.com/

Described twenty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," Jack Wright is a veteran saxophone improviser based mainly in Philadelphia. He has played mostly on tour through the US and Europe since the early 80s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. Now at 72 he is still the "Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation," as legendary guitarist Davey Williams called him back in the 80s, on the road as much as ever. And he continues to inspire players outside musicschool careerdom, playing sessions with visiting and resident players old and new. His partners over the years are mostly unknown to the music press, and too numerous to mention. He's said to have the widest vocabulary of any, including leaping pitches, punchy, precise timing, sharp and intrusive multiphonics, surprising gaps of silence, and obscene animalistic sounds. A reviewer for the Washington Post said, "In the rarefied, underground world of experimental free improvisation, saxophonist Jack Wright is king".
