Sunday, March 9th, 11-1:pm
Open Meditation: Off the Cushion and into the Street

This session will meet earlier than usual so that some of us can head off to Dublin for the march to Wendy's headquarters. Proponents of farmworker justice are calling on Wendy's to join other major corporations in signing on to improve working conditions in Florida's tomato fields.

A Zen gatha, said before sharing food, begins, "Innumerable labors brought us this food. May we know how it comes to us. Receiving this offering, may our virtue and practice equal it."

In this globalized system of exchange it is often very difficult to know what labors brought us our food, but through social justice networks we can learn about the conditions of farms and even contribute to improvements.

The practice of loving kindness begins in our heart, and continues the moment we rise from the cushion. We carry it, or it carries us, forward into community to smile and listen to one another with our full attention. It also compels us to stand on the street, not out of anger, but like a beacon or a lighthouse guiding those who steer our corporate ships. Without making them the enemy, we can call to them to stop and move toward compassion.

In the 1980s, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote, "In the peace movement there is a lot of anger, frustration, and misunderstanding. The peace movement can write very good protest letters, but they are not yet able to write a love letter. ...A fresh way of being peace, of doing peace is needed. That is why it is so important for us to practice meditation, to acquire the capacity to look, to see, and to understand. It would be wonderful if we could bring to the peace movement our contribution, our way of looking at things, that will diminish aggression and hatred. Peace work means, first of all, being peace. Meditation is meditation for all of us. We rely on each other. Our children are relying on us in order for them to have a future."

Weather you attend the march or not, please join me to sit in quiet on Sunday.

Let's learn to become the still source from which change grows.

Let's try this simple practice together.

*We sit for two 20 minute sections, with mindful walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after the sit. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable! There is no cost. Donations are welcome.

* Florida farmworkers' are vary vulnerable to exploitation, including forced labor and sexual violence. Wendy's is one of the few major corporations still unwilling to sign on to the Fair Food Program, which would provide basic support to farmworkers. Information about the campaign here. Information about the Central Ohio events, including the march, here.

Trance Studies: Becoming Fish

How do we adapt to change like fish moving through water?

The Cuyamungue, or "Oma", trance is a shamanic practice used to cultivate visions and a dream-like awareness.

This session will include the "Fish Trance", a posture based on an image of the goddess of running water, Chalchihuitlicue ("she of the jade skirt"). According to the Aztec story, when a flood was sent to the earth by Tlaloc, her consort, Chalchihuitlicue had compassion for the humans and changed them into fish so they could survive. When our wold becomes flooded with difficulties, how do we become like fish, had home in these new conditions?

At this trance session, we first do the Singing Shaman to open the door, than Chalchihuitlicue’s Fish. We will have an introduction beforehand and a discussion of our experiences afterward.

We take an experimental approach to trance studies, not a dogmatic one. The Cuyamungue technique is a practice of new-shamanism based on the experiences of Felicitas D. Goodman (Where the Spirits Ride the Wind). Felicitas was an anthropologist who studied alternate states of consciousness and developed a technique for their cultivation. Felicitas believed that she had discovered an ancient and universal way to allow entrance into an alternate reality. This tradition of trance practice is maintained locally by Felicitas’s daughter, Susan Josephson, and in formal organizations in New Mexico and Germany.

*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 7:45 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience, but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal.

*Young adults / teens welcome.

*Susan is not expecting payment so this session is by donation. Feel free to support her visit and the maintenance of the studio space with a small contribution.

Writing about the nature of impermanence, Zen philosopher Dogen reminded his students,

Do not wait for the teachings from others,
the words of the scriptures,
and for the principles of enlightenment.

We are born in the morning and die in the evening;
the person we saw yesterday is no longer with us today.

These facts we see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears.

Feeling lost and trapped in my emotions this week, a dear friend reminded me how my suffering can be like the labor pains of a mother giving birth to a new life. If I can make space for my own heart to expand beyond the boundaries of my habits, I can allow myself to become something wholly new, something never before seen on this earth. Neither simply better nor worse, this new self stands at the limits of what is possible. Seeing my experience as the ground of a limitless transformation allows me to experience my emotions fully.

Looking at myself in its process with a sense of wonder, I can be wholly unexpected to myself. I can be both like the mother offering up a part of her body to the air and like the new child taking it's first look at the bright sky. Both the mother and the child carry ancestral knowledge of birth in their bodies. Again and again I am reminded, this is the central task: to trust myself in becoming.

Real rebirth is not an idea, but something to be experienced uniquely, in ourselves and in community. The most direct way to cultivate a feeling of renewal is to set aside all projects, become still, and watch with focused curiosity the newness of time.

Let's try this simple practice together.

Binaural beats and the oscilloscope: A gentle introduction to sound art

Instructors: Krista Faist and Samuel Hoar
Fee: $27.50

In this workshop, participants will learn how to generate binaural beats, and in the process learn the basics of the oscilloscope. Binaural beats (discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839), or binaural tones, are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, caused by specific physical stimuli. The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject’s ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain.

The oscilloscope is an electronic measurement devices that can be used to observe the characteristics of a circuit in real time. It can also be used for debugging and hardware hacking.

Open Meditation: The better way to live alone

"Do not pursue the past.
Do not lose yourself in the future.
The past no longer is.
The future has not yet come.
Looking deeply at life as it is
in the very here and now,
the practitioner dwells
in stability and freedom."

In this way, the Buddha advised a student not to live like a hermit always apart from human contact. Awakening to the present, he called this "the better way to live alone." (Bhaddekaratta Sutta)

True sovereignty of the self, true freedom, can only be found if we live vulnerable to love in this in-breath and this out-breath. Quiet, solitude; retreating from others can be a way to heal, these things can nurture our sense of our own wholeness. Yet, giving ourselves over to this flash of lightning, this child's laugh, this is the essence of the healing power of solitude.

Our life's purpose is not far away. It is here already. Don't wait for your appointment to begin living fully. As Samiddhi, a student of the Buddha, described it,

"I, friend, do not reject the present moment
to pursue what time will bring.
I reject what time will bring
to pursue the present moment.
...
This Dharma is here-present, out of time,
inviting inspection, leading onward,
to be realized by the wise each for herself."
(Samiddhi Sutta)

*Please join us for this simple practice together.

*We will sit for two 20 minute quiet sessions, with mindful walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after the sit. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable. There is no cost. Donations will be accepted.

Open Meditation: Seeing with the Heart

How does our heart turn when we see suffering? How does it turn when we see indifference or when we see violence? How does it turn when we see beauty?

This month's meditation will be a collaborative experiment exploring sight and empathy with photographer David Ike. After a 20min meditation, allowing our thoughts to settle, David will offer us a handful of images for contemplation. As we look at the shapes and color made from a projector's light on the wall, we can also bring our mind's eye inward to the motions of our own heart.

As a part of the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, Thich Nhat Hanh asks his students to affirm, "We will learn to look with the eyes of compassion at those we think are the cause of our anger." To look with the eyes of compassion is to know that others are not the cause of our emotions but that our feelings arise in the meeting of our heart with an object of experience. When we learn to care for our own suffering, and we see that others are the victims of their own pain, will our anger dissolve?

To look with the eyes of compassion is see with our own heart open and vulnerable to experience, available to whatever comes forward - to feel the emotions on another's face, to turn with the motion of a wing, to jump with the dance of light.

Please join us for this conversation and experiment of sight and feeling.

We will sit for two 20 minute silent sessions, the second one with images, and will have quiet walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable. Those new to meditation are welcome to give it a try and can learn from the experience of the group. There is no cost. Donations will be accepted.

Sunday, Oct. 20th, 7:00-9:00pm
Trance Studies: Grandmother Bear

We will be hurt. Caught in the agendas of others, in the indifference of the system, or in consequences of our own mistakes, we get thrown off our feet. How can we heal our bruised bodies and our bruised hearts? Here is one way.

As in the past, we will have two sessions of the Cuyamungue trance. Each consists of a particular posture and the sound of a gourd rattle. Through a particular style of concentration, participants can "ride" the rattle into an aware, dream-like experience of an alternate reality. We will have an introduction beforehand and a discussion of our experiences afterward.

The first session will be the Singing Shaman posture, which incorporates vocalization (useful for "opening the door"), and the second will be the Bear posture. This is trance posture based in Native American sculpture. The energy from Grandfather (or mother) Bear is understood to help in healing (psychological, spiritual) and restoring harmony and balance. Come with your pain, come with your hurt, and offer it to the arms of the Bear.

We take an experimental approach to trance studies, not a dogmatic one. Openminded people of all kinds are welcome. Find out what's useful for your practice.

*Young adults / teens welcome.

*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 7:15 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience, but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal.

*Susan is not expecting payment so this session is by donation. Feel free to contribute to her visit and the maintenance of the studio space with a small contribution.
