Writing about the nature of impermanence, Zen philosopher Dogen reminded his students,
Feeling lost and trapped in my emotions this week, a dear friend reminded me how my suffering can be like the labor pains of a mother giving birth to a new life. If I can make space for my own heart to expand beyond the boundaries of my habits, I can allow myself to become something wholly new, something never before seen on this earth. Neither simply better nor worse, this new self stands at the limits of what is possible. Seeing my experience as the ground of a limitless transformation allows me to experience my emotions fully.
Looking at myself in its process with a sense of wonder, I can be wholly unexpected to myself. I can be both like the mother offering up a part of her body to the air and like the new child taking it's first look at the bright sky. Both the mother and the child carry ancestral knowledge of birth in their bodies. Again and again I am reminded, this is the central task: to trust myself in becoming.
Real rebirth is not an idea, but something to be experienced uniquely, in ourselves and in community. The most direct way to cultivate a feeling of renewal is to set aside all projects, become still, and watch with focused curiosity the newness of time.
Let's try this simple practice together.

Writing about the nature of impermanence, Zen philosopher Dogen reminded his students,
Do not wait for the teachings from others,
the words of the scriptures,
and for the principles of enlightenment.
We are born in the morning and die in the evening;
the person we saw yesterday is no longer with us today.
These facts we see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears.

Binaural beats and the oscilloscope: A gentle introduction to sound art
In this workshop, participants will learn how to generate binaural beats, and in the process learn the basics of the oscilloscope. Binaural beats (discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839), or binaural tones, are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, caused by specific physical stimuli. The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject’s ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain.
The oscilloscope is an electronic measurement devices that can be used to observe the characteristics of a circuit in real time. It can also be used for debugging and hardware hacking.
Instructors: Krista Faist and Samuel Hoar
Fee: $27.50

Open Meditation: The better way to live alone
Do not lose yourself in the future.
The past no longer is.
The future has not yet come.
Looking deeply at life as it is
in the very here and now,
the practitioner dwells
in stability and freedom."
In this way, the Buddha advised a student not to live like a hermit always apart from human contact. Awakening to the present, he called this "the better way to live alone." (Bhaddekaratta Sutta)
True sovereignty of the self, true freedom, can only be found if we live vulnerable to love in this in-breath and this out-breath. Quiet, solitude; retreating from others can be a way to heal, these things can nurture our sense of our own wholeness. Yet, giving ourselves over to this flash of lightning, this child's laugh, this is the essence of the healing power of solitude.
Our life's purpose is not far away. It is here already. Don't wait for your appointment to begin living fully. As Samiddhi, a student of the Buddha, described it,
"I, friend, do not reject the present moment
to pursue what time will bring.
I reject what time will bring
to pursue the present moment.
...
This Dharma is here-present, out of time,
inviting inspection, leading onward,
to be realized by the wise each for herself."
(Samiddhi Sutta)

OSU Photography Club, group show opening!
OCTOBER 2013
It Looks Like It's Open - 13 E Tulane Rd, Columbus, Ohio
The Wasps Nests and Valerie Kuehne will be joined by Columbus's own experimental artists Ben Bennett and Ryan Jewell. Come on time and witness a rare, aboveground emergence of the mysterious Worm Man.
How does our heart turn when we see suffering? How does it turn when we see indifference or when we see violence? How does it turn when we see beauty?
This month's meditation will be a collaborative experiment exploring sight and empathy with photographer David Ike. After a 20min meditation, allowing our thoughts to settle, David will offer us a handful of images for contemplation. As we look at the shapes and color made from a projector's light on the wall, we can also bring our mind's eye inward to the motions of our own heart.
As a part of the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, Thich Nhat Hanh asks his students to affirm, "We will learn to look with the eyes of compassion at those we think are the cause of our anger." To look with the eyes of compassion is to know that others are not the cause of our emotions but that our feelings arise in the meeting of our heart with an object of experience. When we learn to care for our own suffering, and we see that others are the victims of their own pain, will our anger dissolve?
To look with the eyes of compassion is see with our own heart open and vulnerable to experience, available to whatever comes forward - to feel the emotions on another's face, to turn with the motion of a wing, to jump with the dance of light.
Please join us for this conversation and experiment of sight and feeling.
We will sit for two 20 minute silent sessions, the second one with images, and will have quiet walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable. Those new to meditation are welcome to give it a try and can learn from the experience of the group. There is no cost. Donations will be accepted.
We will be hurt. Caught in the agendas of others, in the indifference of the system, or in consequences of our own mistakes, we get thrown off our feet. How can we heal our bruised bodies and our bruised hearts? Here is one way.
As in the past, we will have two sessions of the Cuyamungue trance. Each consists of a particular posture and the sound of a gourd rattle. Through a particular style of concentration, participants can "ride" the rattle into an aware, dream-like experience of an alternate reality. We will have an introduction beforehand and a discussion of our experiences afterward.
The first session will be the Singing Shaman posture, which incorporates vocalization (useful for "opening the door"), and the second will be the Bear posture. This is trance posture based in Native American sculpture. The energy from Grandfather (or mother) Bear is understood to help in healing (psychological, spiritual) and restoring harmony and balance. Come with your pain, come with your hurt, and offer it to the arms of the Bear.
We take an experimental approach to trance studies, not a dogmatic one. Openminded people of all kinds are welcome. Find out what's useful for your practice.
*Young adults / teens welcome.
*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 7:15 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience, but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal.
*Susan is not expecting payment so this session is by donation. Feel free to contribute to her visit and the maintenance of the studio space with a small contribution.

Wrest
This trio plays acoustic, fully-improvised music on sax, upright bass, and percussion. The mood can range from a brash, barely-controlled chaos to very delicate. I'd say we try to avoid musical conventions, including the things we've done before as a group. Trying to become aware of our unconscious notions about what's good or bad in music, and allowing those notions to be upset. Creating an intensely vulnerable moment that makes possible a strong connection to each other and the audience, and also makes possible a total failure to achieve whatever it was we wanted. This show in Columbus will be towards the end of our third tour as a trio.

Ben Bennett (percussion, from Columbus, OH)

For
me, the last few months would have been impossible without the real
sangha-jewel that surrounds me. A sangha is a community of kindness and
friendship. It is hardly possible to make it through hardship and find
our own deepest selves without this. According to the Sambodhi Sutta (AN
9.1), the Buddha advised his students, "admirable people as friends,
companions, and colleagues ...is the first prerequisite for the
development of the wings to self-awakening."
Even if we find great realization on our own, the effect on the world is minimal if we do not express our realization among others. Truly, cultivating our own awakening is not separate from cultivating the awakening of those around us.
One of the central tasks of a supportive community is to looking and seeing who we each truly are. A supportive community keeps us from being lost in our deluded perceptions of ourself. At the same time, we must practice giving our selves over to our community, taking our guard down, and - as much as possible - being authentic even though we may be afraid of their judgment.
While there are many places where we can improve, a true friend knows these flaws are not the whole of our being. She can remind us of our own best qualities and our own deepest aspirations, and we do our best to do the same for her.
Those who are free and feel they would benefit, let's sit in silence together allowing our thoughts to rest so we can cultivate deep listening and non-judement, in order to melt into something greater than ourselves.
*As we have in the past, we will sit for two 20/25 minute silent sessions with quiet walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable. If you've never sat in silence in community before, come on time and ask questions.

Wrest and unnamed happening
Jack Wright (saxes, from Easton, PA)
Evan Lipson (upright bass, from Chattanooga, TN)
Ben Bennett (percussion, from Columbus, OH)
