Mud Lotus: Building Refuge
Many of us feel afraid when we consider the state of things to come. Politically, environmentally, or personally, it can feel like we are a small boat on a turbulent sea, liable to tip over at any moment and sink into the depth of the ocean.

In the face of an uncertain and life-denying future, it's all the more important to support one another by embodying non-fear and by creating places of refuge for ourselves and others. When we practice in such a way that the diversity of life can flourish around us we build this sanctuary.

As Brother Phap Dung, of the Plum Village Sangha, suggested in a recent interview, "The future is built with the present moment and how we take care of it. If you are fearful, the future will be fearful. If you are uncooperative, the future will be divisive. This is very important. / The future is not something that will come to us; the future is built by us, by how we speak and what we do in the present moment. / Community practice is crucial at this time. It’s crucial not to be alone in front of the computer, reading media. That makes the world dark for you. Find flesh. There are still wonderful things happening." < http://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2016/11/22/13638374/buddhist-monk-mindfulness >

For the two hours of our sangha (community) gathering on Sunday, Jan 29th, we will do our best to build such a place.

We'll sit for two 20-minute periods divided by walking meditation. Time will be made for everyone to discuss--sharing our strategies for creating safe places for ourselves and others or sharing whatever comes up for us as we struggle to do so.

Mud Lotus is anchored by Seth and Sara who believe sitting practice should be accessible to everyone, all bodies, body types, and abilities. Folks can stay 5 min. or the whole time and move in whatever way best supports their practice. We welcome folks of all religions, races, sexualities and gender identities. Please let us know if there is something we can do to support your practice.

Trance Studies: Purification
In this session, we will focus on a posture intended for the purification of guilt and misdeeds.

As usual, we will open the door with the Singing Shaman posture. Then participants can take the opportunity cleanse their "impurities," however they understand that, with a posture based on the Aztec goddess Tlazolteotl. Associated with decay as well as fertility, Tlazolteotl represents healing through the consumption of our guilt and regrets, especially impurities of the heart. We "feed" her our regret or shame and she leaves us clean and renewed.

"[Tlazolteotl] was the Goddess of the black, fertile earth, the rotting earth, the fecund earth that gains its energy from death, and in turn feeds life. Associated with purification, expiation, and regeneration, She turns all garbage, physical and meta-physical, into rich life." (priestess, Dr. Anne Key.http://www.matrifocus.com/BEL09/key.htm)

Come vision together.and experiment in this trance. May we experience ourselves rising fresh and unencumbered.

For more than twenty years, Susan G. Josephson has lead workshops which take participants through ecstatic trance. Based on the work of her mother, the anthropologist and spiritual teacher, Felicitas D. Goodman, Susan has developed a syncretic technique for visionary experience.

(Learn more about Felicitas’s legacy in the US and Germany atcuyamungueinstitute.com and cuyamungue-institut.de )

*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 2:15 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal that touches the body.

*Young adults and teens welcome.

*Susan does not collect payment; donations are accepted and will be put towards the maintenance of the studio space.

Mud Lotus Sangha
Lotus Mantra Workshop
This mantra, written as Om Mane Padme Hum, is well known in Tantric Buddhism, but this particular way chanting it is unique.
In this workshop, we will practice the mantra with a visualization and a dedication to the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (also known as Chenrezig or Quan-Yin) the embodiment of compassion. Avalokiteshvara is known as the "observer of the voices of suffering in the world." The lotus represents the flowering of our true nature, which is pure, kind, and wise and the Lotus Mantra promotes that flowering. Because it grows in muddy water yet remains unsoiled, the lotus reflects clear awareness and undefiled conduct, transcending the world of delusion.

No previous experience in meditation is required – the workshop is open to all.

Columbus Thelema Solstice Ritual
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Come join the Columbus Thelema Meetup as we welcome Capricorn and the rebirth of the Sun for the Winter Solstice.

We have the space from 7pm-9pm on December 22nd, so doors will open at 7 and we will set up quickly and start promptly at 7:30. The ritual should last about 45 minute to an hour and afterwards we will tear down, clean up, and answer any questions anyone might have.

The ritual will involve some chanting, dabbing on of anointing oil, and the ingestion of a small, ritually consecrated cookie. If anyone who plans to come who has medical issues with either nuts (the cookies will be made from almond flour) or cinnamon (in the anointing oil) please direct these concerns to columbusthelema@gmail.com.

Donations of a dollar or two to help with the cost of the rental of the space would be greatly appreciated, but not necessary.

Thank you, and we hope to see you then!

Love is the law, love under will.
