Open Meditation : Equanimity

Sunday, December 9, 2:00pm

Central to meditation practice is the cultivation of equanimity: being okay with the way things are. In the Buddhist tradition equanimity is the compliment to loving-kindness (metta) as two of the four Immeasurable Minds. It is the unconditional part of "unconditional love". Yet how do we make this equanimity dynamic and not indifferent? The 12 Step community expresses a similar sentiment in their serenity prayer: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference." 

Sitting in stillness, watching the objects of experience is a simple and effective way to cultivate this acceptance, this courage, and this wisdom. We will sit for two 20 minutes sessions with short silent walking in between. Discussion will proceed and follow the sit. 

New and experienced practitioners welcome. After the discussion there will be informal tea.

Workshop: Make a Glowie Monster

Dates: Saturday, December 1 or Saturday, December 15
Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Location: 13 E. Tulane, cmh 43202
Workshop fee: $35 per monster (instruction + materials), $60 for two
Instructor: Jesse Hemminger

In the workshop participants will make a little stuffed animal monster with LED eyes that light up when you squeeze its tummy. Participants will also learn some basic electronics, along with basic sewing and soldering techniques. No previous experience with electronics or sewing is required. This workshop is suitable for children aged 8 and up (although younger children are welcome if accompanied by a parent).

Indigenous Rights Screening: "As Long As the River Flows: The Grassy Narrows Blockade Story"

"On December 2, 2002 Grassy Narrows Anishinabe Community Members mobilized in a powerful direct action to stop the destruction of our way of life and habitat by stopping logging trucks from entering our territory. Many supporters have joined us in this fight. This industrial logging was destroying a way of life for our people as they cut massive hectares of our forest against our will and carried our trees off to the mills since the early 1950's. Since December 2002, our community has taken on this big logging industry. We succeeded in kicking out the world's largest paper company – Abitibi – and we are still fighting against other companies like Weyerhaeuser who are trying to regain access to our forest. Please join us in celebrating this event with a free screening of the documentary 'As Long as the River Flows: The Grassy Narrows Blockade story'."

Refreshments and lively conversation [facilitated by Tawd Bell, who has worked as part of a delegation to support Anishinabe struggle] will part of the afternoon as well as the film.
